In this blog post, we take a look at how remote work can be seamlessly combined with travel and spending time in nature. Through the experience of our software developer Antti, we see how balancing work and leisure can be achieved in practice when the workplace trusts its employees and offers flexibility.
On his most recent trip, our software developer Antti wanted to combine work and being in nature in a more relaxed way than usual. The idea came from a partner: they had spent sunny days in the archipelago back in August, and this time they wanted to experience the autumn storms from the comfort of a cabin. With an “let the storms come” mindset, they set off—but to their pleasant surprise, the weather turned out to be sunny for three days, and the quiet island offered the perfect contrast to a busy everyday routine.
Antti managed to balance work and travel well. Early in the morning, before the rooster in the yard started crowing, he got up for a few hours of work. Later, in the evening twilight, he spent some more time on work, and the rest of the hours accumulated from a previous busy project were used efficiently. This experience reinforced that by taking advantage of flexibility, it is possible to combine work and nature without compromising either.
For the next trip, Antti is planning a skiing trip to Lapland. Staying in a cabin will allow him to work if needed, but for a ski trek, he doesn’t plan to bring his laptop—then it’s all about enjoying nature completely unplugged from work.
Trips like these serve as a reminder of how important it is for a workplace to provide room for flexibility and to trust its employees. It doesn’t mean constant time off, but rather the opportunity to align daily work with one’s own life and the rhythm of nature.
